A young girl and her coal-powered robot are forced to venture out into a resource-stripped world in order to find a renewable energy source.
In 2019, I co-created my graduation short film Renewed with Joshua Crew. Its aesthetic harmoniously melds our favourite animated styles from Laika and Studio Ghibli films. My fascination for the craft of stop motion inspired us to render our digital characters as hand-made physical puppets. His love for Ghibli’s painterly look informed our colour palette and environment designs. Our 2D effects and matte painted backgrounds paid further homage to Miyasaki’s work.
While we conceived, direct and deliver this prize-winning graduation short film, I took on several key pipeline positions myself. I coordinated a production team of 28 freelancers, managing all aspects of the pipeline: concept art, matte painting, animation, 2D effects, compositing, rendering, and score. My artistic contribution was the 3D modeling and texturing of the robot and environment assets.
